Situated on the outskirts of Binalong in country New South Wales is a historic grave site you can visit of a notorious bushranger, Johnny Gilbert. There is an area to stop and park, along Burley Griffin Way at the foot of the hill, where you walk to the top to view the grave.
Hailing from Canada in 1852 and after several jobs, Johnny Gilbert joined forces with Frank Gardiner. Many years later Johnny was shot at a "showdown" on John Kelly's property at Binalong.
Johnny was shot by Constable John Bright. At the time of death he was Australia's worst criminal being a part of over 630 hold ups.
